Anyway I had good news! And much, much bad news that is, good news on the personal front, and bad, bad news on the historic and current events front. So, umm, I guess thats a good thing.

I tell you what; Ill try to keep it brief, since its the summery weekend of party. My initial idea was to make it twice as long as it was, just to spite my computers attempts to sabotage me, but a 4-page depressing history/ current events Journal might leave you all feeling less than titttttttilated so, to sum it up:
The New York Review of Books was a real bum-out, as I told coldenginelogic. A depresso trifecta of nonmagnanimous proportions. 1) A review of Woodwards new book on the Iraq war. In a way, it paints Bush (well, really Powell, but even Bush) as a victim of Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Cheney, and the true warhawks of the admin.. Woodward points to evidence that Bush was indeed skeptical of Iraqi expatriates who said the Iraqi people would be happy to see US troops, or that the occupation would be easy. Woodward also feels Bush is really compelled by these change-the-face-of-history, spread-democracy ideals. Regardless, it is sad to know that a) Bush is wrong, we cant change the middle easts culture overnight, b) even if you think Bush has convictions, theres still Cheney, Wolfowitz, and Rumsfeld telling himexcuse me, advising him on what to do. 2) A guy reviews ten, ten, books on Bush and the environment and alternative fuel sources. Here, well theres no saving Bush, Im afraid. The guy is a total shill for fossil fuel and timber-cutting interests. Who dya think paid for his campaigns, anyway?? As for whether hydrogen can be used as a fuel in the future, theres a lotta physics to go into for a Journal, especially for a dope like me who isnt a chemist. As for global warming um, its a bitch. 3) There was also an article on torture by the US army in Iraq. rockinricky was asking why people made more of a big deal about that than the American hostage who got his head cut off. Id like to address this, with respect to his bringing up the question. Yes, what those murderers did was sick, wrong, on a level with serial killers, and they should suffer the same fate as those criminals do. US abuse of power in Iraq upsets people because were not supposed to be the bad guys; also, its apparently a much bigger problem than the news is showing us. Were talking beatings, torture, and shakedowns across the country. People in Iraq have become edgy because US troops are busting doors down in the middle of the night, roughing people up, and taking them away without charges or evidence of any kind. The military itself has estimated that 70 to 90 percent of people being arrested by the US army are not guilty of anything. This is their own estimate!! Not the Red Cross, not Amnesty International!
Is there an al-Queda presence in Iraq? Maybe. Are there maybe still WMDs hidden under a rock somewhere? Hey, they might show up some day. After all, Bush, Hans Blix, myself, and probably you were thinking Saddam had them (if only because wed helped him arm up versus Iran in the 1980s) the question is without any real evidence of these things in Iraq, are we going to beat up, shakedown, and torture Iraqis on a massive scale as a point of official US military policy?
I would argue that this is the wrong tact to take from a practical standpoint, and horseshit from a humanity standpoint. I am for a strong CIA presence in the region, to infiltrate and root out real terrorist threats. Im for the jailing, and killing if need be, of real terrorists. Im not for the beating the crap outta anybody walking by by our troops. I think its bad across the board: it accomplishes no real fact-finding, it reduces our military to goons, it creates new enemies of our army and country, and it means, most of all, innocent people are beaten, humiliated, and killed.

I suppose for many people its kind of disappointing. It seemed like she was going to vote against war or that she would get into the Senate and actually change things. Its weird how before people get into a role of power, you have a lot of hope for them, yet once they are in a role of power, you realize that they are like every other politician.
Q If you were running for president, who would you pick as your running mate?
CB I really think that people should have an animal as their running mate. Maybe a dog, horse, or cat. [Jeez, what girly choices! How about a big, rabid wolverine? CC] This would make it easy to rule out candidates immediately. For instance, if the animal seemed smarter than the person, we would know not to vote for them. [Now, I dont think a cat is smarter than George Jr., although it might seem smarter that would be tricky. Also, Kerry has a horses face so that might be confusing CC] On the other hand, if the person was able to work well with animals, this might be an indicator that they arent xenophobes or tyrants or plagued by a superiority complex. Additionally, this might break us out of our Puritan leanings. The vice president, now an animal, would have a different perspective on sex, marriage, cleanliness, and manners. They might, for instance, shit on the White House lawn or hump someones leg [ I think Spiro Agnews already done those I know Kissinger has, at least. CC]; they might cough up a fur ball during a staff meeting. Things might loosen up a bit, while also shaking us out of our solipsism.
