It's interesting watching this show on VH1 where they try to get bands together for reunion shows.
They were successful with getting A Flock of Seagulls to play, even though the brothers hadn't spoken for twenty years. I would've thought Mike Score, the singer, was too big in his business concerns (I'd seen a Where Are They Now? show on the same network a couple years back), plus the not-speaking-sibling thing... it was very satisfying to see this corny little show reunite a family, let alone a band.
They were not successful with Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and I wasn't surprised. The host appeared arrogant by the time they'd gotten to that band, what with invading the bass players house with a big-ass film crew (who looked really pissed at this), and the attempts to trick people into opening doors by pretending to be a delivery man, or arranging interviews without declaring the motive was a full band reunion.
I'd seen an interview with Holly Johnson not long ago, and... it didn't surprise me at the end when he declined. There does seem to be a slight exploitive tack by the show (umm... how much did A Flock of Seagulls get paid, anyway???) and Holly seemed aghast at the prospect of being exploited, yet again, by the music biz machine... I really don't blame him.
The saddest thing to me is seeing the members of these bands who really want to be in a gigging band again. The Flock's bass player, who I totally was sure would turn them down since he has five kids and a mansion in France, was the most enthusiastic member of both bands in doing the show.
He seemed to love the comraderie, the rehearsals, and the show itself, not to mention he had to fly to get there so he did travel, too. The backup singer of Frankie, also, looked very charged to go back on a stage.
...I hope that various members of these bands, who really want to tour, get the idea to join forces with each other! I would love to see the Flock bass player, and that Frankie singer #2, find some other new wave guys to go out and tour. I would pay to see a new-wave supergroup multi-band-tribute show. Would ROCK!
