Since my family had an old copy of The Texas Book of Lists, I knew Dr. Pepper was invented there, but I was looking at a Virginia facts book at work, and it seems there is a Virginia connection.

Charles Alderton was a pharmacist at Wade Morrison's drug store in Waco in the 1880s, where he'd mix up soda fountain drinks for people (back then, a soda was a mix added to carbonated water... which I guess it also is at most restaurants and 7-11s). He wanted to create a soda that smelled like all the smells of the soda fountain. After a few tries, he came up with a successful flavor in 1885.
Depending on what story you believe (the Dr. Pepper Museum site says there are over a dozen), Morrison named the drink after his old sweetheart's dad, Dr. Charles Pepper, from his old home in Rural Retreat, Virginia.
After a while the drink became very successful, but funnily enough Alderton dropped out of the production (said he was just interested in pharmacy work, not soda work!) and let the company go into the hands of Morrison and a "beverage chemist" (yeah, I dunno either) named Robert Lazenby. They eventually took the drink to the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, it's first major out-of-TX exposure. There were about 20 million folks at the fair, and it helped the drink catch on in the world, as well as the first recorded use of hamburgers and hotdogs on buns.
Dr. Pepper is the oldest soda company in the U.S.
No, I don't drink much soda anymore. I mostly use unsweetened tea, Glacieu Vitamin Water, beer, and milkshakes! In fact, at college we used to get a generic version, The Skipper, a lot.... but since my dad is a Texas-Virginia connection, I'm interested in others.
ARRR!!! smile smile

As you know, I know nothing about tattooing. However, I certainly wonder why someone would want a picture of a giant octopus on their leg. I suppose it's too late to change the picture, though, right?

Nicholas Christopher has been one of my favorite authors for a few years now. I've read a lot of his poetry, but I like his novels better. Have you read A Trip to the Stars?
