Well, I wrote a big, long thing on Lost In Translation that got zapped when the site was under repairs...

I liked the movie. I got a bit teary-eyed when I left the theater. It's a subtle, slowly unfolding movie, with some occassional bits that are more comedic or more along the lines of movie conventions. But overall, Sofia Coppola has made a thankfully downbeat movie. There are a couple of times where we see little of a conversation and I wish there was more, but overall I'm glad that Coppola chose nuances rather than hitting you over the head with obvious plot or character bits.
Since it is kinda spare at times, Murray and Johansen need to be really good to pull the movie off, and they are, and do. Ribisi isn't in the film much, and Anna Faris is really good at playing a total idiot.
The movie made me and and While I wish some of the characters didn't do some fuck-ups, this is what lends the movie its tragic side... and where would movies be if people were just, you know, nice to each other all the time? Less successful in developing tension, for one thing...

I'm curious about this film that I've seen previews for a couple of times-- In America. I don't know what the hell it's about, but it seems compelling, a family story with some edge to it... but I still dunno what the hell it's about. Stars Stephen Rea and Samantha Morton; directed by Jim Sheridan (I didn't know who he was either, but they tell ya in the preview that he did In the Name of the Father and My Left Foot).
