there is a 8/31 month-close-out PS below
It's time for Correspondence Fun -- your fun place for review of excerpts from actual letters!
Episode 284 - Frida Kahlo
"I don't particularly like the gringo people. They are boring and they all have faces like unbaked rolls (especially the older women)."
- letter to a friend, early 1930s
"High society turns me off and I feel a bit of rage against all these rich guys here, since I have seen thousands of people in the most terrible misery without anything to eat and with no place to sleep, that is what has most impressed me here, it is terrifying to see the rich having parties day and night while thousands and thousands of people are dying of hunger...Although I am very interested in all the industrial and mechanical development of the United States, I find that Americans completely lack sensibility and good taste. They live as if in an enormous chicken coup that is dirty and uncomfortable. The houses look like bread ovens and all the comfort that they talk about is a myth."
- letter to Dr. Leo Eloesser, early 1930s
(re: Marcel Duchamp, while attending an early 1939 exhibition in Paris) "...the only one who has his feet on the earth, among all this bunch of coocoo lunatic sons of bitches of the Surrealists."
"You have no idea the kinds of bitches these people are. They make me vomit. They are so damned 'intellectual' and rotten that I can't stand them...It was worthwhile to come here only to see why Europe is rottening, why all this people -- good for nothing-- are the cause for all the Hitlers and Mussolinis. I bet you my life I will hate this place and its people for as long as I live."
- letter to Nickolas Murray, 1939, also about her Paris visit.
8/31 addition - wow, so many nice journal-entry enterers!! I think maybe I just didn't make enough rounds to other folks the last few days...
Hey, my friend Jimmy is making a list of The Worst Songs of the 1990s, so suggestions of any radio-spawned cringe-inducers are welcome.
