Okay...put yourself back in time FIFTEEN YEARS. Yes, fifteen WHOLE YEARS! I know it's hard to believe how different things were:

1. We were ruled by President George Bush,

2. we were about to finally DEFEAT Saddam Hussein, and stabilize the mid-east!

3. the American economy was turning south,

4. the vice-president was a scary guy....

...and speaking of him, let's remember Dan Quayle, via the book The Dan Quayle Quiz Book by Jeremy Solomon and Ken Brady, a book so important that underground rock mag Forced Exposure (home of Sonic Youth, Chain Gang, Lydia Lunch, Big Black, the Meatmen, Spacemen 3, etcetc) reviewed it, and I always wanted a copy, and I found one TODAY in the used book sale.
The quiz question that was in the Forced Ex review is the following one:

During the 1988 campaign, how did Quayle explain his statement that "rural Americans are real Americans"?

A. "Rural Americans are real Americans. Theres no doubt about that. You can't always be sure with other Americans. Not all of them are real."

B. "I'm a rural, and I'm an American. That's what makes me real. See?"

C. "It's rural America. It's where I came from. We always refer to ourselves as real America. Rural America, real America, real, real America."

D. "I just meant that rural Americans are real. So are urban Americans. They are real too. We are all real. Really."

E. "The really rural Americans are really, really rural. Real. Rural. Rrrrrr. I like words that begin with an 'r'."

Please cast your vote as to what the right answer is, and I'll put it in next journal.

To help you out, here are some other Quayle interview and speech quotes:

Five weeks after voting against a bill for strengthening the Veterans Administration, Quayle defended his decision as "a youthful indiscretion."

Quayle explains the difference between the House of Representatives and the Senate: "You can get a bunch of guys and go down to the gym and play basketball. You can't do that in the Senate."

Quayle spoke out against waste in the Pentagon by saying "In the past, we have tried too much to prevent the making of mistakes."

In a speech about the Republican dedication to family, Quayle said "Republicans understand the importance of the bondage between parent and child."

Discussing education , he promised that "We're going to have the best educated Americans in the world."

He once told reporters in El Salvador that the U.S. would "work toward the elimination of human rights."
