Happy Winter Solstice

I had a few lazy days, true... where maybe I sat around on here and other blog sites too long... but I now have a few things to report on.

TheDishwasher Birthday Drunk Meet- I had a good time here, with Dish and bredoteau and maybe some other folks and really liked C and K, the bro/sis duo. Talked a lot about Will Ferrell stuff with C (she was wearing an Elf shirt) and decided I should maybe try to see that. I hadn't really been in Frederick proper; it was surprisingly like Old Town Alexandria except CHEAPEST DRINKS I've gotten out in a bar. $4 glasses of Bulleit Bourbon?? WOW. Yes, I had a good time. Dishy was turning 21, btw, hence we were all simply at a bar, dranking.

relevantswitch / silvereve Football and Micro-Xmas-Shopping, and Chiaroscuro- Yeah, had to go to a Plan C on Saturday for watching NFL stuff, and luckily r.s. was up for it, and s.e. didn't mind too much. We also stopped by Michael's (that store) temporarily to get some fabric as s.e. was making things in a holiday vein. r.s. convinced me to go to Chiaroscuro dance night in DC. We thought a lot of SG people would be there, but uhhh not many. SaintInsomniac was there with his lady A and nice lady R. R was the only one in the place who was gonna dance with me, I think. Aside from my face, I also was the only person wearing a floral blue golf shirt. Chiaroscuro is a GOTH night... but thankfully, it wasn't really. I mean, I was afraid they'd play nothing but obscure.... Christian Death and like hardcore drum and jungle bass 12"ers from Luxembourg... actually, they played Madness, The Specials, The Smiths, The Proclaimers. Stuff I could dance to. I'd had quite a bit of Wild Turkey, so I was into it. One time, I left the men's room following an individual who was my height and dressed in... apparently 17th-century women's garb. Kinda like Heidi, you know. I told R and she was unimpressed, but I wish I'd asked Heidi for a dance. I'm pretty shy even drunk, I guess.
btw, I am still afraid to go to r.s. and s.e.'s bathroom. They said it was haunted the first night I was there... well, they said they'd done work that they thought would sufficiently de-haunt it... but I am still scared to go in there. I also have to pee like 8000 times every time I'm there. I think the fear makes me have to pee, then I pee, then I'm scared, and so on. NOT funny!!
I also discussed Jean Reno movies with them. I have been generally disappointed with Reno's movies, underwhelmed I guess you could say, but I like him. This, and the Ferrell discussion with C, lead to my movie rentals of yesterday evening:

Elf- I started watching this one in the afternoon. I watched the first 15-20 minutes, the North Pole segments, and frankly... shit. Thought it was shit. So I stopped it, dozed a bit (due to Frederick partying Monday night), went to dinner, came back, and figured.... eh, I'll watch the rest of it.
I actually enjoyed it a LOT.
I kind of... I don't want to say...
Yeah, when he goes to New York, the movie really picks up. The alienation-in-big-city thing is played well (except never-seen-a-revolving-door-before gags are a bit played out, right?), his rapport with his coworkers, his meeting his dad (James Caan!), a bunch of good bits there. Funny cameos: Amy Sedaris! Andy Richter and Kyle from Tenacious!! Peter Dinklage!
So yes, I enjoyed it and... I don't want to say... you'll make fun of me... you will...... but, when he talked to the little girl in the doc's office, I got a bit misty-eyed. Maybe I also did when he tells Zooey Deschanel she has the most beautiful voice in the world... and maybe I cried a bit at the end.

Fuck you!! Shut up!! SHUT UP!!! Fuck you and you and you!!! It was NICE, okay???!!!

Wasabi- Ahhhh, Wasaaabiii... I'd been thinking about renting this one from the first time I saw it at the Video Vault... which is, like, 3 years ago. Jean Reno, as a cop, in Tokyo? HAS to be good.... or sucky. But HAS to be good, right?
Turns out- it IS good!! It is a French film set in Tokyo, but it is very much a Hollywood movie. I should stress, it is a Hollywood cop movie, so don't go in expecting ART. You can watch with subtitles (I did) OR, if you hate them you can watch it dubbed (ick), but I encourage both arty-but-not-too-snooty and Hollywoody people on my Friends list to see this film!

It is, in fact, my fave Luc Besson movie now!!

Luc didn't direct, but he produced and wrote it. Grard Krawczyk directed. Reno stars as a tough (yes!) dedicated-to-the-force-with-no-personal-life cop (original!) who punches people 30 feet through the air (realism!!) but misses his One True Love that dumped him years ago (doubly original!!). He gets called on a "special assignment" to Tokyo (customs official: "Business or pleasure?" Reno: "....neither...") and you know, a lotta investigating and ASS-kicking ensue! Michel Muller is great as the comedic sidekick Momo, and... RYOKO HIRASUE, wow wow WOW, she is amazingly bubbly and cute!! She has killer bright clothes and orange hair. Oh, Ryoko, my love will turn you on! Carole Bouquet from That Obscure Object of Desire has a bit part. Wow, she looks great too, like.... a French Sela Ward? Weird though; that movie I just mentioned (my fave Bunuel one) was made in '77. If anything, she looks... YOUNGER in 2001. She might be a vampire... a reverse vampire, cuz she was in daylight. You could tell by the tires... anyway, she was great too, and there's even a Bad Guy With Bigass Facial Scars (Yoshi Oida), if you were afraid there was not. (note to rollerdisco - there is a key Dance Dance Revolution scene.)

Yeah, so now, I guess... I'm sitting around online. shocked

also a good film
