I'm still mortified when I hear cover versions of "Take Another Little Piece of My Heart" - especially the ones that are all sweetened up. (Faith Hill, I'm scowling in your direction.) I don't think anybody else could bring to that song, or possibly to anything in her catalogue, what Janis did.
I remember working on an album once that was for a 12-year old french-canadian girl. She was doing a bunch of covers, and the album actually sold out of a couple of pressings. Everybody kept praising her voice, but I remember hearing the tracks for the first time and thinking "that girl needs to have her heart broken". It was in no way a shot at her vocals... but there is a maturity and experience that is required to really transcend any material to be a true storyteller, and to really connect and communicate with an audience. I can think of no finer example of just what was missing in that little girl's vocals than Janis.
