I have a grandmother who has had Alzheimer's for the past 3-4 years now. Unfortunately, one Thanksgiving we went to meet her, and while she sometimes used to mix up my name (it never bothered me as she saw my cousins much more often than me), it turned out she had degenerated VERY much in the previous year....and no one told me about it until about 5 miles from my grandparent's farm.

Seeing a grandmother old and senile and afflicted with Alzheimer's to the point that she is 100% not the woman you've known your entire life, nor is she a woman who even knows who her husband is anymore, let alone her grandchild, is a scarring incident....and it has and will continue to dominate my older memories of her, having been more recent, vivid, and jarring.

I told my mom I wanted no contact with her anymore, that she is basically already dead to me, and I thanked her for letting me not cherish my previous thoughts about my loving and wonderful grandmother...instead, replacing them with more vivid and, sadly, more lasting images of the stranger she has become.

I know that sounds harsh...but she doesn't even know that I don't care, and likely couldn't comprehend it anyway...so yes, it's very selfish on my behalf...but...whatever.

Things like that are very disturbing to me...and hopefully your grandmother is still or has been pretty coherent. But at 95, I'm sure she has lived a full life, one that she's proud of, especially havng her family and people like you, and I hope she finds the peace of whatever afterlife there is, with happiness and satisfaction for having lived this one.

Why dont my friends listen to me when i tell them things? My friend Holly is heading down a road of pain and heartache but she wont listen to a word i say...damn puppy love!!!! I hope she doesnt feel the pain that i have but shes heading down the same road i see it....its useless
