Down two computers!

So several days ago I found my netbook no longer had a working keyboard or touch pad. Previously it had issues with the shift keys (both of them) randomly stop working. I did a little web searching and found that it was a known issue with this model (a cheapo Dell 2-in-1) caused by a poor design that results in the membrane connecting the keyboard to the motherboard to break down. Sure enough, if I twist the base of the computer it obviously flexes the membrane and sometimes it will start working again. Since the computer only cost $250 about 3 years ago it isn't really worth trying to get it fixed. So I used a USB keyboard, booted it from a Linux USB stick and used shred to delete everything on it securely. It sucks, but no big deal since it was only my backup computer and I really only carried it around with me when I'm on-call for work.

Then the other day I was working at the kitchen table (normal for me) and got up to go get something off the counter (5 feet away) and my 5 year old daughter knocked over my freshly poured, full cup of coffee onto my only working computer (surface book 3) that is also only ~4 months old! I immediately detached the base from the screen and turned the base on edge to allow the liquid to run off. Unfortunately no amount of drying fixed it after 4 days of relentless attempts. All of the ports on the left side and the internal (discrete) GPU do not work at all. I did not purchase the accidental protection plan *sigh* for a computer that cost about $3600. I contacted Microsoft Surface support and since it was a fairly recent purchase they are going to allow me to swap out the entire computer for $649 + tax. Unfortunately they treat the tablet and keyboard portions are one whole unit and cannot replace just the base. So for the last few days I've copying essential files off via WiFi (slow as fuck) before I ship it back. Then 4 - 6 business days later they are supposed to ship me out a replacement. It'll probably be a refurb one, but hey I'll take what I can get over a dead machine. Note to future self: buy the damn accidental protection plan next time!
