In the near death experience categoy...
This was the weekend of the big annual "cabin campout" down in VA near the Shenandoah NP.
We go take over 3 or 4 primitive cabins operated by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club for a couple days.
Getting to the cabins required driving up a steep, poorly maintained dirt road about a mile and parking and then hiknig from there. The hill on Friday was not too tough. At least going up was pretty easy in the Outback.
Coming down this afternoon though was another matter. Driving down a sheet of ice was what it amounted to. Despite a pace in 1st gear at about 2 mph, I got sideways more than once, caromed off more than a couple rocks and after what seemed like an hour, finally made it to pavement. I was never so happy to see asphalt in my life. That was enough adrenaline for the month. Many folks hiked down- they had it easy- especially the ones with sleds!
But in the end, we all made it down safe and sound and as my son noted, the Outback only has a couple new "beauty marks."
Next year..REMEMBER THE CHAINS!!!!
