I'm sitting here listening to "If Everyone Cared" by Nikelback for the umpteenth time and I can't help but think about our oceans. I don't know how much trouble the oceans are really in but I know that we need to do some serious work. The Pacific garbage patch is one testement to this fact and even if you think that's crap just walk along any shoreline. I always see trash butting up against the coast. Its not so bad at our beaches but the lagoon by my work always has lots of trash that just sits there. I see discarded food wrappers and old toys in the same waters as Bat rays and Snowy Egrets. I see the lagoon water turn black after a major storm because all the sewage that was pumped into was disturbed and now the Bat rays and Jelleyfish are long gone. I want to help the oceans not because of what I'm told but because of what I see. I helped pick up 30 pounds of trash and 20 pounds of recyclables not 200 yards from the pacfiic ocean on a beach that is supposed to be the cleanest in Santa Cruz. It felt good to make such a difference and I want to do it again and again. I want to do it because I know that animals will thrive and photgraphers will see them and familes will see them and we'll be able to enjoy them. When wilderness is clean our world thrives and when our world thrives we thrive. Its a simple equation, one you'd have to be blind not to see.
I've decided to make a commitment, a commitment to help conserve. I made that commitment a while ago and I have a personal project in the works to help me keep that commitment. I want to do more though. I've decided I'm going to volunteer at some of our local aquariums and beach projects to help keep our oceans clean. This weekend we're going to Aquarium of the Bay and I'm going to sign up for their volunteer program. It may lead to a job at the aquarium or another like it with any luck.
I want to help our oceans. I don't know how much trouble they're in but I know that i don't want them getting any worse.
