The government is involved in people's personal lives for many reasons. Bush is not just pandering to the religious right with this statement. He has many interests in mind. For instance, think of all the tax dollars that will be lost by homosexuals being able to file joint tax returns. Seriously. There's also the problem of further abuses concerning citizenship. It's a tricky issue. However, the bottom line is that he's out and out addressing it as a religious and moral issue. This is theoretically idiotic because no church that believes homosexuality is amoral would wed two people of the same sex anyhow. If Bush is so worried about the definition of the union in the eyes of God, he need not fear, as his god isn't going to recognize the marriage. However, the government should legally recognize two taxpaying citizens commitment to one another without making it a religious issue, seeing as there is a division of church and state clause in the Constitution.
There are a whole bunch of books on our newly purchased bookshelves that will explain to you why Bush is currently our President and why we're not going to be able to get rid of him.
