this mornin' i saddled the cattle, milked the horses, greeted the clock and punched my boss.
all because you held me last nite.
c'mon children!
a little blues courtesy of dr. john for all my faithful readers out there. i can't fucking believe i forgot to mention that yesterday was oscar pete's 77th birthday yesterday. HAPPY *belated* BIRTHDAY OSCAR PETERSON!
this morning was punctuated by stepping over a guy passed out on the sidewalk that was using a empty and partially collapsed water bottle as a pillow and "take 5" from dave brubeck and paul desmond. those two are like vodka and vermouth, spaghetti and meatballs. by that i meant the pianist and saxophonist, not the homeless guy and his makeshift pillow.
last nite was spent downtown at my class. thankfully, as painful as the drive downtown from the vall-ay is after a full days work, class seems to go by pretty quickly once i'm there. i also made a little purchase, the new easy rawlins mystery from walter mosely and the stranger from camus. a little reading material for my trip east. following class i met up with my special girl and got an 1/8th to share with my boys in new york. unfortunately the goods were not the level of quality i had hoped for. if only i'd seen her a few days ago she would've had some ak from berkeley. its still dank but when i bring isht for my boys i don't feel right unless i'm packing some bomb diggity.
great googilly am i excited to go on vacation. my flight to new york departs lax at 8 am tomorrow morning. not much left to do except get some rest and remember to wake up early! and of course, select the music that i'll be bringing with me, that's always a bit of a chore.
bless helen borgess and kkjz.org. she's playing a little etta james for me right now. etta's got so much strength and love that she could've kept the titanic afloat just with her singing. but she would've had enough sense to toss lame kate winslet and vapid leo dicaprio into the sea to suffer a miserable death.
so i arrive in new york and have someone picking me up from the airport. how cool is that? cooler yet is the person that'll pick me up and the night we've got planned enjoying some live music. just received word that i'll be on my own till about 11 pm sunday because benson'll be in philly at a wedding. david called yesterday and proposed that we play golf in long island. somewhere called montauk? chances are i might just spend one evening chez benson and then crash on monday and tuesday at david's place so he won't have to do too much driving on tuesday when we chase a small white ball around a large green field.
i keep telling myself that i'll make a list of all the jazz acts that i've seen live. perhaps that's something i'll start upon my return, or compile during the drive from saratoga springs to dc with my mom and dad after the baby sis is dropped off at college. they really do grow up fast, i can still remember the way that her feet would dangle from the piano bench during her first recitals or the look she had on her face when i discoverd that she took all of the stickers from the collection she inherited from me and put every last one of them on her door.
sentimental me.
