just put em in your mouth and suck em, suck em, suck em, suck em!
big ups to chef and his chocolate salty balls. fuck me, isaac hayes is a baaaad mama jama. i was pretty surprised when he asked the audience if anyone watches south park. and even more surprised when the whole bowl erupted and isaac kicked off a salty chocolate balls number. it was the hardest i'd laughed in a long time. isaac seemed to really enjoy singing the song. his back up musicians were fantastic. the set up included isaac and his keyboard, three back up keyboardists, two female and one male vocalist, one accoustic and one electric guitar, bass guitar, and two percussionists, one on a kit and the other doing natural rhythms with bongos. the bassist gave me the best bass guitar solo i'd heard in a very long time. its too bad that i don't remember their names to give credit where credit is due. the electric guitarist was given free reign to wail away during a couple numbers. during the second song of the set, he stepped over the mic stand and used it to create a reverb with the strings on his ax. the two percussionists worked together during their extended solos and were fucking brilliant. they were coaxed on by isaac with a little "come on, now" and some "pick it up, y'all" before he finally proclaimed "there it is!" the man wasn't lying, they found the groove and stuck the motherfucker. so now i've got to bolster my soul collection and get some isaac hayes to go with my marvin and reverend al and otis. i guess its something i could listen to on my flight to new york on saturday. yeah, that's how i'll justify spending more money at amoeba.
the other two acts last night were arrested development and maceo parker. shady and i didn't get to our seats until about 8:30 so we only caught the last two songs from the folks from the ATL. they still sound pretty good and announced that they'll be releasing something new in a few months. maceo parker sounded terrific. its pretty obvious that karl denson and his tiny universe are heavily influenced by maceo. maceo's trumbone player was great, really used the richness of the instrument to play with a lot of feeling.
let's see, on last night's menu for shady and myself was a gorgeous french red followed by a little alize accompanied by some sauteed portobello, brie, olives avec herbs du provence, fresh baked bagette, and sliced french ham. yum. oh yeah, and nice bowl of dank. between the food, drink and dank, i was happier than a pig in shit. after all, the bowl ain't the bowl unless you have a bowl.
there is one thing, however, that i just did not understand. isaac hayes was doing his thing on stage, making wonderful sounds with his bands and there were all these people sitting on their hands. shady and i did a little dancing and plenty of singing along when we were asked to join in by isaac. and there were tons of couples in the bowl just sitting there, i've got more warmth in my fucking fridge. to all you fellas out there, when you've got isaac hayes on stage setting the table for you, making the fire hot in the cool night's air, you've got to wrap your arms around that lady beside you. when i see shit like that, i can't help but think, "these guys must have zero game in the sack."
can you dig it?
