CELIA CRUZ (19**-2003)
heaven just gained an angel with mad chops. although she didn't live up to her desire to die performing on stage, celia cruz never failed deliver the goods prior to her departure. i was lucky enough to see her perform last summer and feel that i'm a better person for it. people estimated her age to be close to 80 but no one ever knew for certain. i remember clearly on a cool night last summer, grown men around me openly weeping when she sang her ballads and then dancing with a fierce passion when the conguero picked up the rhythm. i can't speak spanish but i didn't need a translator to understand what she sang.

Unfortunately, I'm gonna miss the show this weekend, as much as I want to go. Erin and I will be up in San Francisco for a wedding but hopefully I'll make the Joao Gilberto show. That should be amazing.
