Birdie's Christmas Adventure Part 2:
A week ago today, Beth and I went to see my mother's favorite play The Nutcracker. It was performed by our kickass Colorado Ballet company, and though I was sick with a cold, I still enjoyed the play, even if my mom was upset that the director changed the order of songs and lead to an anticlimactic finish.
Also my mother got angry at me before the show because of the suit I picked to go with me on the plane. I had a nice thrift store suit that looked great and I performed in, and my mom thought I was looking sloppy because I didn't realize how wrinkled the suit got in the suitcase after who in godsname had to search through my luggage for whatever terroroists keep in their luggage these days.
The day before (Thursday) I had my first wild and zany adventure. My best bud "Roach" (it's his last name, he's not a pothead) Took Beth and myself to meet his oldest younger sister (a close friend of mine too) and then to eat at a little Gyro shop that opened in what used to be a Pizzahut (when I lived in Colorado). Afterwards we drive back, and he's not to certain how to get to my house so he takes the way he knows which is about 2 miles out of the way, but I point him into a shortcut and while three blocks from my house, the car runs out of gas. Now I keep thinking. "How can you let your car drive with such low gas in this weather?" and end up just laughing because it was only negative six degrees and things were still pleasant and I just made sure I was warm and looked good in my old Korea scarf and my kickass cameltoe jacket.
So we walk three blocks home to my mom where instead of just going out to get gas I find out the Gyros I ate went through me faster than George W. Bush goes through a national budget and find myself on the toilet for a brief moment. Then we get my mom's gas can and drive up to the gas station to fill it up and when we get back we find there is no funnel for the gas can to put gas in the car.
We're only a few blocks from home so my mom volunteers to drive back and grab a funnel and Eric and I look for an alternative receptacle in his trunk. We find a plastic waterbottle that becomes Macguyvered into a funnel and we end up on our way.
After this we make plans to go to Casa Bonita. Now if you've seen South Park there is an episode where the kids go to this famous restaurant, and I remember going a few times as a child, but it's known for 4 things. Crappy Mexican Food, black bart's cave, cliffdivers ans soapapillas. Now I wasn't in the mood for bad Mexican food (Being half mexican, and eatting great homecooked meals for the days before this trip) but I had to let Beth experience this wonderful restaurant and all of it's goofiness.
So it was Roach, his two younger sisters, the oldest sister's husband and their child, another mutual friend from highschool and his wife and the 8 of us and a rockin' time talking about highschool and running around Casa Bonita like we were going to get kicked out ourselves.
Random Visit Trivia:
1. Roach's oldest younger sister first points out that I gained weight, but was kind enough to not call me fat, and instead said I looked very healthy.
2. South Western Colorado has a lot of mexican influence and even the Gyro place we went to had a mexican menu, attached to their usual selection.
3. My mom makes the best enchliadas and I'm glad my Beth learned her recipe. And how to make soapapillas
4. This was the time I spent rummaging through things my mother saved and found that I have about 50lbs worth of comic books that I will be taking home later.
5. My cameltoe jacket is still cool
6. My mother loves the Nutcracker because when she was a little girl she was in the play as Clara (the heroine) and one of my mom's last memories of her mother was having her see her perform before she died (my mom being born on Christmas, and her mother dying the day after my mom's 15th birthday)
Stay tuned to part 3 of my wild and wacky vacation!
