After Mondays successful flight of SpaceShipOne, does anyone else feel like we're living in a different world?
Although man still hasn't traveled in space, it definitely is a monumental achievement. I say man hasn't traveled in space because A MAN still hasn't. People say MAN has walked on the moon but that's not true. Representatives of the U.S. government have walked on the moon. *I* still have not, nor will I ever, walk on the moon. So I don't say that 'man' has walked on the moon. I prefer to say that Neil & Buzz & the rest who were part of the Apollo space flights have walked on the moon.
Even still, with Scaled Composites flight on monday, 'man' has not gone into space. A company has gone into space. A single self financed man still has yet to. Although if Paul G. Allen does go into space himself, you might say that a single self financed individual will have traveled into space. But it's debatable if he, being co founder of Microsoft, could be considered in the same 'self financed' category as me and you. Sure, it was his money and his money alone that is financing the project, But the man has many many times over the financial resources of every company I've ever worked for combined.
Until the first man (hopefully it will be a woman though) flys into space in a production space craft that they buy, same as a Honda Civic or a Cessna airplane, I still don't think we'll be in the future world that we're already supposed to be living in. Still, the beginnings of the reality of that world happened in real results on LIVE TV with the world watching and, like the song on Mortal Kombat says, "It has begun!"
