Part 1 of instalment 5. I still have a lot more to talk about regarding this project. But this is probably more than you're all willing to read anyway.

The real gem that Howard had me make was the compact spa. A tiny little spa not much bigger than a dinner table. We've never taken the time to make up our own website for it so here is someone elses. Those pictures are off of our lil pamplet thing that Bill (another guy who works here) made up. The model in that picture is one of Howards daughters friends from school. The model in the images from this site is Howards daughter Roxanne. She's a total myspace girl. They had me install broadband at the Adelanto location (way out in the desert) where she is the secretary just so she could browse myspace all day.

The spa itself is marketed as a four person spa but you'd have to be some tiny ass mufuckers to be able to fit four people in there. You might be able to fit four Sins in there but that's about it, you aren't gettin' four full sized adults in it comfortably. In fact it's not even designed to be able to handle four people. If you put four full sized 150lb adults in there the water will spill over the side unless you keep the spa half empty all the time. I made it so that there's so little water in there for a few reasons. The biggest reason was because I didn't want to have too much water pushing on the lil plastic walls and have the poor lil dude all bulged out. I didn't want the water pressure to distort the lines of the spa. It is, after all, made out of HDPE (High Density Polyethelene), the same plastic that milk jugs are made out of (just a lot thicker). Another big reason was so that there'd be less water to heat up and keep hot requiring less power to operate. It's one of the most energy efficient spas ever made. Another is that it's only 250 gallons. If it gets dirty just drain the damn thing and refill it. It's only like 3 er 4 bathtubs worth of water so filling it uses about the same water as 4 people taking a bath.

Still for most peoples usage it's a really great size. It fits anywhere since the dimensions of it were chosen specifically so it would fit through any doorway. It can be put in any bedroom in a house. It is so small that it needs very little power. It's one of the only spas that you just plug into the wall like a refrigerator. You just fill it with water, plug it in, and turn it on. Most spas you have to wire straight into the box with 220 (of course you can do that with this one too, that's one of the sales options and it makes it so that it heats up in just a few hours (even less if you fill it with hot water from your sink or whatever)).

One feature of this spa is that it has the rigid covers. Both lil guy and our two larger square spas have rigid plastic covers. We fill em with styrafoam beads so they're totally insulated. My spa is the only spa I know of that I can walk on. Those nagahide covers are garbage. Not only are they subject to the elements and last like 6 months before they split, tear, and become otherwise useless, they're heavy as all hell, a pain to use, and they're just ugly.

I sought to eliminate all of these issues when we designed the lid and it's closure system which I did quite well I think. The only thing I didn't like is that I didn't come up with the actual shape for the lid, that was done by Ken. I didn't really like what he did with it. I thought it made it too busy and wanted it a lot simpler. After all we didn't want the spa to be too fancy looking. That was something we needed with the larger premium spas. For example the recesses where the jets go, for the round spa and larger square spas I gave them a really pretty gothic shape. I tried to make it look like the popes hat. For lil guy I made them look as plain and bland as I could. I made them look like a flattened potato chip.

That model had to be downsold anyway. It was getting to be too nice. No way would the dealers be able to move the larger premium $4000 spas when there's one that's just as nice, albeit somewhat smaller (which is actually a good thing for most people) for $1700 sitting right next to it. This, after all, is the lowest priced rigid spa ever produced. The coleman inflatable spa is about $900 list. The price of lil guy actually creeped up to around $2500 list and I think that's where it's at now since Howard kept adding in all these other features and things that just brought the cost up quite a bit higher. Things like the thermoformed side panels and stuff.

The side panel I talked about a few journals back. If you look at the first link at the top of this entry, the right top spa has the panels on it I'm working on. The reddish things. In the other entry talking about it, I noted how I'm making an injection mold to replace the vacume formed parts, also noting that it will save around $100k per year and that every day Howard understandably gets more and more anxious to get this thing rolling.

I'm hoping to have this mold done by the beginning of next week. I work 7 days a week. It's easy when you love what you do. And I do love to build things. But I'm anxious to get this thing done too. It's been taking way too long and a little bit ago I promised myself I wouldn't go anywhere or do anything until I finished it. I'd like to hurry up and get this thing done so I can go fuck BeckyJane in the ass. biggrin
