I'm not sure I should be saying this being that I'm 32 years old, but New York's Oldies Station, WCBS-FM switched formats last week and it kinda felt like the end of an era. The station had been around forever. I grew up with my parents listening to the station when it played 50's music. Recently it played 60's and 70's music mostly, but I find myself missing it because New York radio sucks. And since my CD player was stolen all I have in my car is the radio and god knows I'd rather listen to the Beatles, Marvin Gaye and Sly and the Family Stone on WCBS than Smashmouth, J Lo and insipid Morning Zoo fodder on every other station. Trust me, NY radio is that bad.
Most people at work seem to think that I'm strange because I feel that way when I could be listening to the Killers on KRock or something. The Killers are fine, I guess. As current bands go they're not awful. But in a way it revealed how completely out of step with modern culture I reallly am. I don't watch much tv, I have never once seen an episode of "American Idol" or "Friends". I don't go to the movies that much. I hate most current music.
I don't think I'm a snob-god knows I've expressed my love for Tiffany, Christina Aguilera, and the great Kenny Rogers movie "Six Pack" on this very journal page. I'm just not interested in most things. The idea that other people can "entertain" me is kinda funny to me. Artists in any medium that I find interesting just don't come along very often. I don't read much fiction because I think the authors are boring. I haven't rented a movie since I can remember.
And I miss hearing Marvin Gaye and the Beatles on the radio.
I just like what I like I guess.
