I had to leave work for an hour or so last night to run into Manhattan to get my shots for Africa. When I walked out I noticed my Hide-A-Key dangling from the tape I used to keep it affixed under my back bumper. (Yes, I have a hide-a-key. I've locked myself out of my car too many times not to. Laugh all you want).

So I take the hide-a-key, put it on the seat next to me, and make a mental note to retape it later. I head into the city.

My appointment for the shots is 6:15. The clinic was on 68th and York. I was circling the block at 6:13 worried that I would never find a space when I see one open up RIGHT in front of the clinic! Lucky me! I pull up behind the car exiting, put on my blinker and wait when BAM! I'm hit from behind. A livery cab had come round the corner not looking and slammed into my car. Hard. My car not only stopped working but started rolling backwards as soon as the livery cab went into reverse to remove himself from my trunk. I pulled the parking brake. Got out and the livery cab driver informed me that there was "no damage" and that he was leaving. I lost it. I jumped over the passenger seat and out of the car (because I was too close to the car on my left to get out) and got in his face. I told him at a rather elevated volume that before he hit me my bumper was not curled under my car and that my car in fact was running. He told me that it wasn't his fault. I called the police. He got back in his car to wait. I turned back to my car to realize-that I had locked the keys in the car. Again. And sitting comfortably on my passenger seat was the spare key. Yay.

My friend Christy, who is going to Africa with me and was meeting me at the clinic, was there by then. She ran in and got her shots, then stood in for me waiting for the police while I ran in to get mine. We were quoted $200 over the phone. The final price for all the shots was $580. Yay again.

Went back outside and waited for the police-until 9PM! They took the reports. I called a tow truck. They came at 10 and towed me back to the studio-where we were still shooting, btw.

I left my car at the garage across the street and they told me that it might be best to kiss my Lebaron goodbye.

le sigh.

Oh, and then I called my mother later and told her about the shots. Now, mind you when I first discovered that I could get these shots I asked her if there was something she could do-being that she works in a clinic that gives vaccinations to people from third world countries. She never got back to me. When I called her last night she said "Oh, I could have gotten you all those for free."

That's a Yay hat trick.

On the other hand Jesse Malin's new album is so good it hurts. Look him up.

Lamentably, the less one questions, the easier life really is...at least in the short term. appreciate, in a way, the period of time in which I believed that significant political changes was possible within the Democratic Party. That seems such an antiquated notion now. frown
