I started this day pretty bummed out, and truth to tell I'm still kind of sad for reasons that I won't go into now. But I will say that it's tough to stay depressed on Norwegian Constitution Day. Ballard, the Seattle neighborhood I've lived in these past nine years, has a huge party and parade every 17th of May, even though at this point the neighborhood is about as Norwegian as the surfer dude currently playing "Thor" in your local multiplex. And I'm as far from Norwegian as they come -- half of me is Dutch-Russian, the other Puerto Rican -- but you don't really need to be a son or daughter of Norway to appreciate syttende mai. You need only three things, all of which I have: 1) helmet with horns, 2) bottle of akvavit, 3) the ability to say mmmmmmmmjolnir! and mean that shit.
