I've been stuck at a data center (not for SG stuff, mind you) since midnight, waiting for e2fsck to rebuild a borked filesystem, with no end in sight.

(Click this if you don't know what that means and want to know):

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
So, one of the myriad ways a drive can fail is that the "superblock" (think of it like the keystone in a bridge) gets corrupted. So what happens? Well, go back to that bridge analogy. The bridge collapses, leaving a pile of bricks on the ground. So now you've got this pile of bricks but no way of knowing where they're supposed to go. Basically it's the same thing: the data on the drive is still there, but the block that tells the system what order to put the data in is lost, so it looks like the drive is empty.

This utility I'm using basically looks at all the data and puts it back in the right place, one file at a time...about 6 million files at roughly 10 per second. It has to be done while I wait for it, so I can wrap up the fix when it's done, and it takes roughly FOREVER. Anyhow...

The worst part? It's maintenance day on Warcraft, so all the realms are down for another few hours.

Okay, I take that back, that's not the worst part. The worst part is that I've been up here all night, I'm supposed to work today, it's nowhere near done, and, because I thought this was only going to take a little bit, I didn't think to change into pants and a sweater, so I'm sitting here, shivering, tired, and bored.

UPDATE: 1:11 PM
Still waiting for e2fsck to recover files. But hey! That's not to say nothing's new. As astute readers may have noticed, Shalome proved once again why she's the awesomest girl in the world by bringing me some much-needed supplies. The bad news? Besides the fact that this whole data recovery business is slower than a herd of turtles stampeding through molasses, it would seem that the closest I can hope to get to a fully recovered filesystem is a jumbled directory tree. To go back to that bridge analogy I talked about in that spoiler up there, this is like if, instead of starting off with a pile of bricks, I was starting off with shattered pieces of bricks, and this process, instead of putting all the bricks back in the right place, just glued together the pieces. So yeah, I still have to put them all back in the right place. Okay, now imagine that there are a couple thousand bricks. frown

UPDATE: 3PM
Still. Fucking. Waiting. At this point, I'm less concerned about any clients being upset that their email is down, and more concerned that security here is going to tell me I've overstayed my welcome, since I'm a customer of a company that leases rackspace from the facility, rather than a customer of the facility itself, which means I'm technically a visitor. They've been pretty nice thus far though. Oddly, aside from feeling a little lightheaded and weak-legged, I'm not really feeling like the only sleep I've had in the last 31 hours has been a 30 minute nap on an uncomfortable stool.

UPDATE: 6PM
Oh my dear sweet goodness. It's done. Finally. Well, done with the "let's put the shattered bits back together" part. Still a ton of work left to do. Still stuck here until I can get it to a point where I can work on it from home. Also, hitting yourself square in the temple with the corner of a large web server hurts. blackeyed
