The next five best records of '04...

10. The Black Keys - Rubber Factory
These two guys get better and better with each album. This, wailing, bluesy romp is pure guy shit. And they're from Akron, Ohio. My buddy's girlfriend is from Ohio, and, because of my ever-increasing appreciation of Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach, I am no longer allowed to make fun of her for that fact. Listen to "10 A.M. Automatic" or "All Hands Against His Own."

9. !!! - Louden Up Now
Chk Chk Chk (or Pow Pow Pow... or any other repeated syllable with panache) moved from Sacramento to New York City two years ago and became overnight assholes. And while sticking seven guys on a stage is usually a recipe for suck, these jerks keep the party rolling in the club and on the record. Dance, punk, dance. Hate them later. "Shit, Schiesse, Merde" and "Hello? Is This Thing On?" fucking rule.

8. Green Day - American Idiot
By now you're as sick of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" as I am, but dowload the nine-minute+ "Jesus of Suburbia" and give Billie, Mike, and Tre another chance.

7. Moonbabies - The Orange Billboard
That makes two Swedish bands in the top 20. Crazy. This is more Pop City than Garage Town, however, and a welcome marriage of infectious beats and lilting melody. Yay for "Sun A.M."

6. Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News
I'm not writing anything about this record. You all have it already anyway. And fuck you if you have a problem with them "selling out." I, for one, like my favorite bands to make a little money. It means more favorite records.

Tomorrow... the TOP FIVE!
