Fuck this decision-making shit. I had a great goddam weekend and I'll make up my mind on what I'm doing next year and what I'm doing with the rest of my life some other time. When I'm good and ready.

For now...

This Franz Ferdinand show was one of the best shows I've seen this year. And I know I say that a lot... I get mocked quite a bit for constantly gushing over the last CD I heard, or the most recent movie I saw, or, as in this case, the last concert I attended.

Can I help it if I love everything? I'm a happy guy. I keep cynicism and devil's advocacy at arm's length at all times.

To that end I've cocked up an impromptu list of the top 5 shows thus far in '04. Your job (and this is my first time soliciting folks for responses; be kind) is to give me your own 2004 top 5 -- of anything... best CDs, movies, overheard pick-up lines. Whatever.

Because reveling in the best things in our lives reminds us how happy we really are.

Number 5 was Death Cab and On the Speakers at the Fillmore on May 3. Not only was DC a hell of a lot of fun, but hometown boys theSpeakers kicked ass, I didn't ruin things by sticking around for Ben Kweller, and my buddy and I both, and at the same time (albeit behind different trees planted around an incoveniently out-of-order gas station bathroom) accidently peed all over our shoes. My date wanted to be designated driver. Volunteered. No questions asked. Good times.

Numero 4: Enon and Pinback at Bimbo's on April 26. Pinback was good and all... but Enon! Fucking Enon! And watching Toko flutter away on that bass... wow. Made me forget all about getting stood up hours earlier. Now that is the hallmark of a great show.

Franz Ferdinand jumps in at number 3. That was this past Friday, June 4, at The Grand. The opening bands (even though I only saw two minutes of one of them) were a waste of time, but once Franz took the stage, the whole floor was one big ass-shaking mess. Wooo-wee. PLUS, some short Irish guy (shorter than me; I liked him already) with a thick accent gave me his beer. It was a Full Sail, which he tasted, made a face, and said, "Ar. S'piss." I was already tossed. That made it all the better. You meet the best people at shows.

Dos! Clinic at Bimbo's on May 21. I used to catch the Low Flying Owls 'round Sacto all the time, but hadn't seen them in well over a year. They opened... and were, well... great. A band I hadn't heard of, Midnight Movies, up next: yes, great. Drummer is the singer is a hot chick. That was a huge bonus. And, then... Clinic. The typically short-ass high-speed set devoid of any stage banter whatsoever all clothed in scrubs and surgical masks. No more needs be said.

AND... number 1.
!!! at The Independent on April 29.
Louden Up came out today. Go.
They're still on tour and will be back in SF end of July. Go.
Amen.
