I don't know why, but I have always had Mission Impossible and Mission Impossible II as a part of my dvd collection, despite having never seen or purchasing them. Well yesterday I saw a copy of Mission Impossible III for, ironically, 3 bucks, so I picked it up. Today I finally decided to watch the damn trilogy. This is the first time I sat through an entire trilogy in one day since my horribly failed attempt to do the Lord of the Rings movies. Here are my thoughts.
Mission Impossible: The most well directed of the trilogy, this is unsurprising considering it was directed by Brian de Palma, the man who gave us Carrie, Scarface, and The Untouchables. Everything was very tense and dark, and it pieced together like a fun spy flick, which is what it was supposed to be so well done. It was however, confusing as fuck.
MI 2: I thought this one would have been far more fun than it actually was. I mean, John Woo directed this one. Fucking action cinema God John Woo!!! And well, to his credit, the action was well done. On that front, it was the best of the trilogy. Everything else though? Fucking horrible. It was dull and boring, and whereas the first one had great tense scenes, this one was just stupid and cheesy. The plot was basically two things. The first was a rip off of the excellent Hitchcock film, Notorious, starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. The second was a rip off of every single Roger Moore/Pierce Brosnan 007 flick. Worst of the trilogy.
MI 3: I thought it was fucking awesome. Directed by J.J. Abrams, who has since directed Cloverfield (I've never seen it) and Star Trek (Also fucking awesome), this was the first one with a coherent plot. It was also the darkest one, while also being by far the most fun. If one were to only watch one of the Mission films, I would say this is the one to watch.
I had a good time today in the end. Sure I turned my brain off the whole day, and basically there was really little substance to what I saw, but it was a load of fun. Even MI 2 was fun, once unimportant things like plot are gotten rid of.
... upon typing all this out, I can't help but wonder, who the fuck would actually read this?
