we got home late from the firesign theatre thingy at ucla--in fact, it's 217 am as i write this.

omg, it was huge, huge fun.

not only did i get to talk to the 4 fire-guys (David Ossman, Phil Proctor, Peter Bergman and Phil Austin) in the audience during the intermission, molly and i both walked out to the campus parking lot with them and their families, just after talking backstage with:

Todd Rundgren, Loudon Wainwright III, John Goodman, Howard Hesseman, Chloe Webb, Mark McKinney, David Thomas and Rick Overton.

everyone we talked with signed our playbill.

we missed talking to George Wendt--he didn't make it backstage to the party.

it's not uncommon to hear firesign, like python (having started "way back then") referred to as "the beatles of comedy."

in fact, there are many beatles references in firesign's enormous body of work, and vice versa.

so, having grown up with firesign myself, as my generation grew up with the beatles, seeing the "four or five crazee guys" together after 30+ years of devoted listening (and parroting) was very much how i imagine seeing the fab four must be like today, if that was, indeed, still possible:

immensely fun, emotionally fulfilling and draining, and, most importantly, everyone knew every word and was invited to sing along.

Haha, nope, that's my semi-hero, Quentin Crisp. Author of many great books, and the documentary Resident Alien is regularly in my VCR.

Favorite firesign quote:

"Oh blinding light, oh light that blinds, I cannot see, Look out for me!"

Thanks for adding me as a friend! smile
