there were itinerant teachers in ireland who would teach the kids when the penal laws were in effect. as you say, they taught them irish, and a lot of the classics. the schools were known as "hedge schools" because they had to hide somewhere outside to avoid arrest.

The professor who is teaching Creative Writing is a very cool lady. I had her in an intro to lit class. She was kind of a slave driver with the work, but she actually admitted this towards the end! Never had a teacher do that before.
Also, she seems really open minded and introduced me to Billy Collins work. One of the few poets I really like.
In addition to this compilation type book of works, we have to read "The Desire of Botany." I've heard of it, but never looked into it. From the description on the back of the book, I can't say it's my thing, but who knows.
Another lit class is reading Trainspotting this semester. I was shocked to see it on the shelves, since this place is usually pretty conservative.

I want to see Kingsey, heard it was brilliant. I am taking another psyche class for my basics needed. I think I need about 5 classes since I am majoring in psychology. This semester will rule though, taking Human Sexuality and the teacher is my teacher from general psyche. So I know this will be tons of fun.

2) Personally, the year started out on a relatively productive note: I finally got the degree that I have been working on (off and on, anyway) since Reagan was president. But my savings/loan money ran out earlier than I had planned, and that really sucked. And it took me forever to manage to get back into the workforce...

It actually doesn't usually get too cold where I live, we're pretty far south as far as Canada goes, which makes me all the more unprepared for it! We actually got snow this year, which rarely happens, and I just don't have the wardrobe for that.
