You know, when Kerry & co. lost this last election, I knew that things in this country were going to get worse before they got better. I had come to accept this, and even achieved some measure of peace from the knowledge that surely, after eight years of this shit and with a (hopefully) better candidate on the Dem side, people would be fed up enough to sweep a Democratic president and Democratic majority in both houses of congress into office. I still believe this will be the case, if we are still having free elections four years from now. But it seems that every time I turn on the TV or check the news blog here at SG, I hear about some new, fucked up shit that the Republicans are pulling, and I wonder if there will be a country left for the Dems to run in 2008. It just seems to get progressively worse day by day - we even have Republicans proposing to throw women who have had miscarriages into jail if they don't report them within 12 hours.

I fear that if things don't begin to change soon, this country is headed for either a right-wing religious dictatorship, or civil war, or both. Either way, if it comes down to that we're all fucked. The idea of people like Jerry fucking Falwell ruling this country and the world with no restraints nauseates me. mad frown mad frown

So yeah, I think it's definitely time to become more directly involved in the political process. I'm not sure exactly how I will go about doing this, but I just don't think that voting or giving money by themselves are going to cut it. Those of us on the left need a renewed commitment to direct action. It was direct action that led to the end of Jim Crow legislation, and if we're going to achieve real change in the future, it will be direct action that brings it about. And I need to be a part of this, because the alternative is sitting back and getting fucked in the ass by the radical right. frown

In other news, life goes on. I think I'm going to go see a few movies this week that I've been hoping to catch - House of Flying Daggers looks like it's going to be really good, and Hotel Rwanda as well. I saw Spanglish a couple of weeks ago - that was a pretty good film. Seeing Adam Sandler in a non-comedic role was pretty disorienting, but he did a good job with his character, even if the curly wig he was wearing looked a bit awkward. (At least I hope it was a wig.) And Paz Vega was both very hot and very convincing in her role. But Cloris Leachman stole the show.

Also saw Kinsey on New Year's Eve. This movie was surprisingly funny, but also very compelling, especially given the current cultural climate in this country. Kinsey was very much a victim of the witchhunt mindset that pervaded this country during the 1950's, and I see us regressing into that type of mindset during the Chimp Era. Hopefully this will all end in a great era of cultural progress like the one we had in the 1960's and 1970's. I just wonder if it ever looked thsi dark during the Eisenhower years. frown

Hope you all have a wonderful week, and remember, the year of the cock begins in less than a month! bok

The professor who is teaching Creative Writing is a very cool lady. I had her in an intro to lit class. She was kind of a slave driver with the work, but she actually admitted this towards the end! Never had a teacher do that before.

Also, she seems really open minded and introduced me to Billy Collins work. One of the few poets I really like.

In addition to this compilation type book of works, we have to read "The Desire of Botany." I've heard of it, but never looked into it. From the description on the back of the book, I can't say it's my thing, but who knows.

Another lit class is reading Trainspotting this semester. I was shocked to see it on the shelves, since this place is usually pretty conservative.

Like my dad says, "Hillary is strong for 2008."

I want to see Kingsey, heard it was brilliant. I am taking another psyche class for my basics needed. I think I need about 5 classes since I am majoring in psychology. This semester will rule though, taking Human Sexuality and the teacher is my teacher from general psyche. So I know this will be tons of fun.
