Why does your boy think this is a bad idea? I mean, in an ideal world, it is always better to take out the loan and continue to establish your credit, but if you have bad credit it makes perfect sense to do this. Any loan you would get would have a really high interest rate.

Hmm, maybe you could take out a loan for part of it and pay it off a month later. Thus you'd get a good addition to your credit history and not have to pay lots of interest.
