Man, what am I going to do now the World Cup's over?
Get back to normality I suppose. Until the league starts again. But first, a rant!
Italy just a bunch of cheating bastards. Poor France. It's all Materazzi's fault.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Heard it all before. You know what? The worst dive in the whole tournament was Thierry Henrys against Spain:
Ooo la la. Cest dificil playing zees Carlos Puyol. Oh, ee as tapped me in ze chest. Ah must now fall to ze terre.. Oh my poor face. IIIIIIIIIIIM BLIIIIIIIND. BLIIIIIIND! Ah, now we av ze free-kick Ahm, how you say, tickety-boo. Va va voom.
Never mind Thierry. Any time you want to start scoring goals in important matches, feel free.
Fuck France. And fuck Australia. Lucas Neill is a thug who almost crippled Jamie Carragher two years ago. Giving away that penalty was exactly what he deserved; and he has no-one to blame but himself. Its the cardinal sin for a defender to go to ground in the box. He couldnt have done it any better if hed sent Grosso a rose-scented invitation.
"Here you go mate. I'm too fucking stupid to be able to defend properly, so I'll just let you fall over me and win the softest penalty in living memory. No matter that it's my own fault and technically is a penalty, we'll just blame you, cos we always blame the Italians."
Guus Hiddink has no right complaining about the referee in that match, either. In 2002, his South Korean team were handed a semi-final by terrible (perhaps bent) refereeing in games against Italy and Spain. FFS, Spain had two goals wrongly disallowed and Hiddink has the nerve to question a dodgy penalty?
It would also have been a hideous travesty if Mark Viduka had got any further in the tournament. There's a guy who needs his ACL ruptured. Never does anything when his team really needs him. Scores for fun in meaningless games, then fucks over his club whenever he scents a move to greener patures. The way he treated Celtic was abominable and his attitude and performance in the season Leeds got relegated made me sick. And I can't stand either Celtic or Leeds.
And considering the way the Australians play other sports I cant believe they play football straight.
Face it. Italy deserved to win. Never mind the two extraordinary, fabulous goals the conjured against Germany. Never mind the quality, team-orientated football they played throughout. They were no worse at gamesmanship than anyone else and considerably less nasty than some. Cannavaro was far and away the best player in the tournament, an absolute rock. He's always been a top quality centre-half, but he took it to a-whole-nother level there. If anyone deserved to lift the cup this year, it was him. FIFA must've been smoking crack to think someone else - even Zidane - was better.
Ah, Zidane....
What the fuck were you thinking? I loved you. You're the greatest player I've ever seen. You did things I could barely comprehend. Your poise, elegance, technique and brain are unparalleled. I know you have fire in your soul. I saw it in 1998, again in the Champion's league, again in Spain; but whatever he said, it can't have been worth that. Not then, not there. And now the memories are tarnished. The pirouettes, the stepovers, the goals in the World Cup Final, the goals against England, the one blazing comet that illuminated Hampden in 2002. All overshadowed by one act of inexcusable lunacy on the greatest stage of all.
Just a tremendously saddening way to end the career of one of the greatest footballers we'll ever see.
Adieu Zizou. Merci.
And that's it for the first blog entry. More might follow.
