I am often amazed by the average person's affinity for some of my artwork. I am even more amazed when they stop their train of thought and get carried away, even for just a moment, by some specific aspect of the work. Most of my motivation for creating is born from a fascination with beauty and those things which give me a sense of wonder and awe (the sublime perhaps?). While most people don't pay very much attention to art, or even anything aesthetic, the average person's capacity for understanding, even on a subconsious level, is pretty impressive.

That's all pretty out of the blue, isn't it? I was at Kinkos, having some simple laser prints made. About three images into the process, the woman behind the counter stopped being a bored Kinkos employee and opened up to the work in front of her. The change in the expression on her face was amazing; from disaffected boredom to a happy kind of curiosity. She called over one of her fellow employees to see the pictures, which is flattering. But, the look on her face when she started to see, to really see the work, was priceless. I just remember thinking, "she gets it". It was far more rewarding than the most praise filled write up.

hell yes indeed; I've been trying to get some time off for ever. Arts Council England don't seem to want to give me a grant.

yeah, it's a completely new set now. smile

i'm glad someone actually "got" your work. it must be nice for a change, i don't meet many people who would "get" most artwork at all. and that's a shame..
