I am beginning to worry a little about my Edinburgh plans... while I still have 3 months to go, I am just beginning to look for a place to stay, and everything I'm finding is in the upper region or even a little over my maximum amount I had figured I could pay, all with no utilities or other included costs that could justify paying the extra and, in addition, my business has been quite bad the last 3 months meaning even my original budget isn't going to be easy to stick to.
Edit to add: Hostels are not very suitable given I need to be able to work -- and the kind of work I do requires a certain amount of privacy and often an ability to burn candles/incense.

maybe you might consider postponing your jaunt until the Spring?
trips around distilleries might be in order to keep the cold out
