I've just finished watching Hero and I've come to this conclusion:
I'd sooner rewatch Rocky 4 than Hero.
Despite it's ridiculousness Rocky 4 had soul, panache, heart. Rocky 4 resonated. All Hero produced was a beatuifully shot mindbender of a story with fantastic fights.
But it didn't have a killer bad guy. Rocky had Drago.
It didn't have a kick-ass training sequence. Rocky trained in Russia.
Hero had great Chinese music that I'll seek out. Rocky had 80's rock and James Brown.
Hero's most quotable line: "All under Heaven."
Rocky 4 has ultimate quotable lines: "I must break you" "You can't win" "Come on man, put out your damned fists" "Living in America" "Drago!!!!!"
and my personal favourite: "If he dies he dies." Right up there with "You wanna see what wasted looks like little man?" "It's no fun when the rabbit's got a gun." and the immortal "You're fucking white bread."
God, how can a movie so cheezy be ultimately cool after so many years.
