A few things struck a cord (chord?) in this post, and in your journal in general. First, I agree... journals sometimes seem so pointless and full of whining and complaining. I find it hard to read sometimes not only because it's irritating, but because I know that such frustration probably doesn't accurately represent the person writing. To compensate, I try to read between the lines and with a huge honkin' grain of salt.
Secondly, volunteer work... I've not been doing enough myself lately but you're right, it's a sanity thing. While a lot of my online art and site building could be seen as volunteer work, I crave that direct human reaction, like helping tend a garden or running the door at a benefit or helping non-English speakers learn the language.
Keep a dream journal.
