Headed home for Thanksgiving. That's the first time I've been home, period, for two years, and the first time I've been home for Thanksgiving in five.
Going home always leaves me with conflicted emotions. I have very strong emotional ties to the PLACE (the state, city, my house, everything), but the people leave something to be desired (both in and outside of my family.)

Love and everything don't mix
I hate these shorter days. My body wants to sleep all the time. Too bad our society is anti-sleep. I can understand not condoning hibernation, but we could at least compromise by allowing siestas.
Well, guess I won't be getting married any time soon. Fucking measure 36. I didn't think Oregon would jump on the "let's put inequality in the Constitution" bandwagon. So disappointing.
My students talk too much. I had to yell at them in class today.

I PASSED MY QUALS!!!
This means I am over "scary hurdle #1" and that I am officially a Ph.D. candidate instead of a provisionary Ph.D. student. Now I have orals to look forward to. (Oral examinations . . . the "look forward to" was pure sarcasm . . . get your minds out of the gutter.)
Four more years to go . . . then...

Congratulations. That's great news.

Hey! Congratulations! I thought about changing my first name to "docter"[sic], so I could get all the respect without the work.
26 kids fresh from high school and the shelter of mommy and daddy (or mommy and stepdaddy, or mommy and mommy, or what-have-you.) Any way you look at it, 26 young and eager psyches. And, for three hours a week, I am in charge. BWA-HA-HA-HA!
Who am I kidding? They'll teach me 10 times what I teach them. I am sooooooo glad to be teaching...

Hey sweetie!!
I'm doing much better now, thank you!
I hope you're feeling better too. {{HUGS}}
I bet you're a wonderful teacher! It must so invigorating to not only teach but to learn at the same time. You are very lucky!

So I'm driving in traffic today when this asshole pulls out in front of me and cuts me off so abruptly that I narrowly avoid hitting him. This wasn't an accident as he looked directly at me and made eye contact before doing it.
Of course, I flipped him the bird. It was a brief, rather half-hearted bird as I didn't think the guy worth...

Sorry you had to go through that, no one should but idiots seem to plauge society like rats on a ship.
I've always been told to just smile courteoulsy by my parents at such things as "it's not worth getting into any trouble over" they say.

I'm back! I'm back! The stressful event that has been hanging over my head all summer . . . well, all year, is over. Now I have a whole weekend of vacation before I have to start actually doing school work.

Hello! I just gave a remarkably bad-tempred reply to your comment in the gyro thread. Sorry. It's interesting you chose the ough combination for sounds; I use that example for pronunciation quite often. It's also quite useful to explain why pronunciation over the internet is tricky. I can think of seven pronunciations for ough (cough, rough, bough, through, though, thorough, hic-cough) and I know some Americans pronounce some of those the same.
Hey, I'm glad your stressful thing is over.

Things are hella stressful right now, so I'm going to try to make myself scarce and get some things done instead of sitting around looking at gorgeous women all day. No, really, I am!

Yes - we have Dr. Pepper in the Land of Oz -- i am actually sipping some right now. It is a little hard to come by here also ... but where there's a will (cum addiction), there's a way
You are the only person on SG who has "Rabbit-Proof-Fence" listed as a favourite film (well as far as I have seen). Now it's MY turn to express transnational-based (?) surprise! I didn't realise many people outside of Australia saw/took to that film ...

I took a loooooooong walk today. God, that felt good. I really, really miss being able to spend an entire weekend hiking and getting filthy-dirty. A stroll across town and back was nice, but it just wasn't the same.
Between full time work/grad school last year I didn't get to hike at all. Now I'm down to full time school, but have a relationship. I...
