Blog entry for today
Part of planning my move and new life in the UK is picking out various charites & events I want to support. I have a few in mind so far and so here they are...
British Thyroid Foundation - Set up in 1991 by Janis Hickey, a thyroid sufferer, with the help of a group of endocrinologists, the British Thyroid Foundation became a registered charity in 1991. We have teamed up with the Justgiving Service to enable you to make secure donations to the British Thyroid Foundation online. As a sufferer of a thyroid disorder this charity means a lot to me and I hope to help further the research on this so that we may live healthier lives.
Cancer Research UK is the world's leading independent organisation dedicated to cancer research, with a team of over 3,000 scientists, doctors and nurses. We are committed to improving our understanding of the causes of cancer and investigating how best to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease. We also fund research aimed at improving the quality of life for cancer patients and providing the best support for patients and their families. Your involvement in fundraising events like Race For Life is vitally important to Cancer Research UK as the money that you raise helps us to continue our research into cancer. In 2005 there were 153, 491 deaths in the UK from cancer. I look forward to the day when even 1 death from cancer a year is shocking and unacceptable.
Survivors UK provides resources for men who have experienced any form of sexual violence during their childhood or adult life. Without the service they provide thousands of men would still be suffering in silence. I picked this charity thanks to Neil Johnson who brought it to my attention a few months ago. Neil ran the Flora London Marathon, an overall distance of 26 miles 385 yds while carrying a 35 lb pack for this charity. You can still help Neil raise money for them via his Just Giving page.
