Thanks to everyone for the kind words concerning the Yankees loss. Anyone who's read my profile knows that I take this stuff a little more seriously than perhaps I should, but I find the drama, pathos, physical force and sheer power of wills that develop during sporting events to be thrilling... and with that in mind, this Yankee loss to the Red Sox really hit me hard. Much harder than I thought it would. As much as it pains me, it really was poetic and the Red Sox deserved it for all their long years of suffering and ineptitude. I want to see them beat the Cardinals in the World Series, partly for my friends who are Sox fans, partly because I want the crown to be worn by an American League East team, and partly because I'm sick of hearing how St. Louis is such a great baseball town where fans don't boo players and shit. Fucking lame. Kick the shit out of them, Boston, and show the nation that the Northeast rocks da house!
But, let's be serious, it's just a silly sporting event. Nothing life-threatening, nothing overly important, and I'm a little embarrassed that all of this has gotten to me. So, I think it's time I got over it, or at least let you believe that I'm over it.
Let's see... what else is on my mind... I find that I can no longer watch the latenight talk shows. Letterman, Leno, Kimmel, Conan, Kilborn's old show, Carson Daly... you name it. It's amazing how similar they are, and as such, how fucking boring they are. Even the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Love the guy, find the show funny in parts, but I can only take the smugness in small doses, like once -- maybe twice -- a week. And please, don't tell me that you're getting real news from these shows... that you're learning something about issues or candidates or various subjects. I'll fucking hurt you if you try to hand me that crap. Have I chuckled at some of the jokes? Absolutely. Have I heard things that I didn't know? Sure. But it's satire, people! And with the exception of the Daily Show, it's usually bad satire.
So, Kerry was photographed in camo while hunting. Innocent enough, unless if you're against hunting, which I can understand (I'm not a hunter, but I'm not against it). But now Bush, Cheney and their droogs are all over Kerry about it. This from the team that hasn't met a gun law they didn't want to overthrow, not to mention that Bush has been photographed hunting on his ranch. Fucking hypocrites. Here's why I can't stand politics (OK, that's not really true... I'm obsessed with politics, but I hate myself because of it), it's shit like this. Stupid distractions. For every comment Bush and his team make about Kerry's hunting... or that the media make about what Bush says about the hunting... are wasted opportunities where real issues could be discussed. This is not unique to Bush, of course. Kerry's guilty of it, too. But unfortunately, Bush and the Republicans are better at spinning it to distract weak-minded sheep, I mean, people for political gain.
Have you seen the latest iPod ad featuring U2? Who doesn't love U2? Great band and watching Bono mug and gyrate got me thinking: whatever happened to frontmen who could really move? Sure, there are singers like Usher who can dance up a storm, and that's cool. Or even, god forbid, Ricky Martin (I can't believe I mentioned Ricky Martin on SG... but I had to in order to make my point, sorry). But where are the rock frontmen who can really move... guys like the late Michael Hutchence of INXS. And, Bono. Guys like that. Knew their bodies, understood showmanship. I guess Scott Weiland, but while I like Velvet Revolver, I'm not a fan of his.
Well, that's all I've got for now. You all have a great weekend. Take care.
