90 minutes. For those of you who recall, I was scheduled to meet with an executive recruiter today, and the meeting lasted 90 minutes. But before you say "Hey, that's great!" let me say that I spent a good portion of those 90 minutes getting beaten up. Not physically, but I definitely left with some scars.
The good news is all is not lost. With some work, I can get myself into a position to find the right job for me. The bad news is I have A LOT OF WORK ahead of me to get to that point, and there's no guarantee that this search firm will help me get there.
I'm really glad I had the meeting because I learned quite a bit, and while it was difficult at times, I was complimented for my candor. So what did I learn you ask? Well, my resume sucks (his words, have a barbeque, invite some friends over... and burn it). I don't have a clear direction or target. I'm doing a shit job of selling myself, or I'm doing a crap-ass job of putting myself in a position to land the right job. And after listening to Mr. The-Man-Behind-The-Desk-Who-Made-Me Feel-Like-Shit say it, he's right.
Which leaves me with a couple of options: I can curl up and die, but I'm not going to do that. I can continue to go about doing what I'm doing and hope for the best, but that's not exactly working. Or, I can roll up my sleeves, admit my mistakes and make some big changes, with or without this firm (which btw may or may not agree to work with me because most of their clients are middle- and senior-level executives... and they cost money for their services). Needless to say, the third option is where I'm headed. But, it won't be easy, and part of me is scared and part of me is excited. And did I mention that part of me is scared. I'm not sure how all of this will turn out, but we left it with me doing some soul-searching and reporting back to them later in the week. I really have no choice but to move forward, and I hope that all of this will end soon in a positive resolution. So wish me luck.
