I've had a variety of little things i wanted to blog about over the past few days but I've forgotten them all. Ah, well. It will come back to me if it's important.

I've been inspired by RedRobin13 to come up with my inspiration of the day.
After all, if I look for it, I know I'll find it. In fact, I easily find more than one. Here's one that sticks with me.

Today's Inspiration: The Brooklyn Bridge

I thought it would be some little pebble, or an expression on the bus, or some exchange overheard, but no. Today it is the very iconic Brooklyn Bridge. When built, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world (it was the longest bridge, period). Constructing it caused workers to get incredible ill and go deaf. It is the heaviest looking of all our bridges, and I think the most unique as well. It has been there so long it counts as part of NYC's natural environment.

I didn't enjoy this bridge for years. I couldn't understand why it's on so many friggin' NYC postcards, right next to Lady Liberty, the skyline at night, and drawings of large apples. It's just a bridge people. It seemed like one of those things we love due to age, history, and sheer visibility.

It took till I regularly drove to and from Park Slope in Brooklyn. To do so required driving in the BQE, which for one short section, passes right by the water with a stunning view of lower Manhattan and the bridge. It was the one stretch of road that I wanted to be stuck in traffic (and the only stretch I inevitably wasn't).My Goddess, it was beautiful.

Then I saw a special on the History Channel about New York bridges (they covered some of them). The history of this bridge and its construction made me appreciate it even more.

So today I am riding on the N train to my new paid internship (YAY!!!!!) which travels over the Manhattan Bridge, with a stunning view south. There is was. The incredible Gothic stonework that continues to the bottom of the river. The overly intricate cabling that is more pleasing to my eye than I can rightly express. The fact that something so enormous can seem so small in its surroundings.
And so I realized, this bridge is more than beautiful. It is more than a modern wonder.

I love this bridge.

And so I was inspired to look again and again. And I was inspired as to the wonders that people make that serve great functions with great beauty.
I am inspired to add a little more flair, grace, and care to necessary tasks.

I am also inspired to find a chance to walk across this Bridge. That will be just wonderful. For that, I want someone to walk with me. It will be an experience worth sharing. smile

So what inspired you today?

I am terrified of bridges...absolutely terrified. I don't know what it is about them..but I've had dreams of them collapsing and dreams of bad things happening on them..and for some reason I can't get past that.

I have borderline anxiety attacks when I'm on a bridge and stopped..ugh.

Inspiration for today? Nothing yet - but we shall see if that changes when I go out soon wink

I saw the same HC special. It really was fascinating! I was in Charleston Thursday night - I always find visual inspiration when I'm there. It's one of the handful of American cities over 300 years old.

Paid internship?!? Do tell!

EDIT: Haha, I think our comments just passed each other out in cyberspace! biggrin
