Well identifying the patterns is the first part i guess.  The cognitive distortions is just about recognizing that sometimes, we exaggerate, or generalize, things like that.  Once you figure out which cognitive distortions apply to you, it's real easy to correct them.  You sort of just learn how silly the use of the filters are.  And it becomes easier to avoid em.  Over time, you just accept the behaviors for what they are.  Our dumb brains just creating problems for us, cause it doesn't know what else to do.  Ceaseless babble really.  Identifying this takes the power of it over you away.  Mindfulness?  It's really just a practiced state of relaxation.  Getting away from the inner voice to a place where it is silenced.  Becomes easy after that.  Power of now helps you get there, but the untethered soul is a better explanation of how and why.

Our brains do this for an important reason.  Reality is too scary for our brains to absorb all of the details in life we create.  Fear of death, worry about an unpredictable future.  This is the number one source of all anxiety.  Once you learn to live in the now, you see new things in the world around you.  You take down the filters that distort the reality around you, make you make unfair judgments about things.  You get there, and all of a sudden, you enjoy just breathing even.  The sound of wind through leaves in a tree.  Life becomes more peaceful.
