Crowbar and C.o.C. at Harpos June 3rd

Let me start by saying this was one of the best shows I have been to in a long time.

I have so much to post about this show, so many ideas that will flow out of it, but I want to rant in my journal before I hit the boards with it.

First and Foremost... Props to local bands that are actually doing something inspiring and actually moving a scene. Its been so long... Detroit used to have some of the best local stuff (Production Grey, Grievance, U. Stomp, etc) and it all seemed to die out a few years ago. Its gotten to the point that I dont like to even catch the local acts.

I got to Harpo's a little early and I caught the tail end of a couple acts that didnt do it for me, and actually commented on the sad state of the Michigan Underground (with the exception of the FlintDeathSquad) and then Hellseen hits the stage.

Hellseen is slow, heavy, loud and violent. These guys are everything I want out of a band and the pit was moving to prove it. As I type this I remember promising to check out their site... HELLSEEN which I am linking to here before I have followed through. I hope everyone who reads this checks it out, these guys are the real deal and deserve the recognition.

So then for the national acts... of which there were 4 instead of 3. First comes Weedeater. These guys were decent pit music but the tension of anticipating Crowbar was too great to be overly impressed. The crowd was moving a little, and from my thoroughly wasted state it seemed pretty good... sort of like Eyehategod whom I am a diehard fan of. Then comes Alabama Thunderpussy. These guys were energetic and heavy... completely not my type of band but it made for a fun pit... they kept the set short and sweet and when they got off stage I was happy to have seen them.

Friday was the first time I ever saw Crowbar. I have tried many times and something always goes wrong, and after ten years of jamming to these guys it is extremely gratifying to have seen them. Their set was everything you could want from a band that is only on stage for a half hour. They played all my favorite songs (including Planets Collide and All I Had I Gave) and kept the intensity flowing. The pit reflected the music and I have more than my fair share of bruises to show it. I would go see Crowbar again any chance I got, having seen them live only making my love for them stronger.

C.o.C.... what can I say? If you are a fan these guys never let you down. Their set came damn near close to two hours. It was everything you could ever want from these guys. I have seen them three times now and every time its better. And every time Deliverance makes for a savage mosh pit. I am not a huge fan, but seeing them live reminds me of why I own a few of their cds. If you havent checked out in the arms of god I highly recommend you do so... there is a lot of passion in it.

So thats a brief synopsis of the show... but I have a few more things I want to say.

"Sponsored Alcoholism"

My brother was pointing out to me the obscene number of drinks that were bought for me by members of the crowd. He says this happens all the time and he is right. I am generally too busy NEVER LEAVING THE PIT to be out buying drinks, but usually there are alot of cool people buying them for me and putting them in my hand.

I bought two SoCo and Cokes when I walked into Harpos. After that I was supplied with 4 shots of Southern Comfort straight during a span of two bands. Then I killed two long island ice t's, and eventually 4 more shots of SoCo. Its easier to drink in quantity when you are sweating it all out in the pit. The point is I only bought two drinks, and was totally hooked up by the scene.

Ever bought someone you didnt know a drink at a show (that is when you werent trying to pick them up?) I know I have done it a few times, but it seems that it happens in my direction all the time. I was curious about this since my brother seemed to find it so fascinating. I will probably start a thread about this if I ever get the motivation to type it out again.

Agent.

Kreator were so good, in my top 10 shows. Thats cool you heard some covers. I really like Crowbar, I remember I heard them kind of late, the first song was Through the Ashes...and I just thought it was so beautiful. I normally like bands with lots of guitar solos and quite often much faster bands but they just have something so good about them. I'll have to get some more of their albums I only have two.
