I haven't always been a big Nine Inch Nails fan. When I first heard the song "Closer" in high school I was disgusted by it. I couldn't understand why someone would write such a graphic song about sex and then play it for the whole entire world, not to mention I couldn't believe people actually wanted to listen to it. A few years later, here I am, sitting at my desk listening to the song on iTunes and thoroughly loving it, because somehow the lyrics now seem sort of sexy coming out of Trent Reznor's mouth, even though he is old enough to be my father. As I was listening something completely new occurred to me: how unbelievably hilarious the song is. Out of all the words you could possibly use to describe the lyrics of "Closer", "hilarious" generally isn't one of them; "graphic" yes, "naughty" yes, "descriptive" most definitely, but not "hilarious". So in case you're wondering why I find it so funny, let me explain it to you. Trent Reznor stands on a stage in front of thousands of people every time he performs and tells them all that he wants to "fuck [them] like an animal," and then gets paid for it. If you don't get why that's funny, think about it for a second and imagine yourself standing up in front of even, say, your co-workers, and singing to them "I want to fuck you like an animal". Now multiply your coworkers by about 1000-2000. Point made. Secondly, the line "I want to feel you from the inside" is like a terrible pick-up line from a clueless, socially retarded moron that would earn said moron a kick in the nuts and a restraining order, yet Reznor makes it somehow sound sexy and could probably use that line to bed just about any of his fans that he wants, male or female. Third, and finally, "You get me closer to god," honestly, what ISN'T funny about that line?! Hopefully this little blog gave you a new perspective on a great song that will give you a good chuckle next time you hear it, if not then you clearly have no sense to humor and take things entirely too seriously.
