y'know...I've been planning a piece of preformance art for some time where we take a washing machine out back to the carnivalgrounds and plumb it with gasoline. Then we put together an act where clowns fill it with dirty dishes and rig it to run with the door open. I'm hoping it doesnt just explode, but that the dual spinnin wate rjet wheels act like flame throwers for a lil bit first.

I wouldn't really call them punk, I'd be more inclined to say "rock & roll with a punk influence".
If you're a hardcore punk band, a death metal band, a ska band or whatever and all of a sudden you release an album and even a video of some slow love ballad because the music industry producer said it'll make you rich and famous, then you've sold out.
Two examples of sell outs are No Doubt and Sugar Ray. I've heard people say bands like Rancid and Bad Religion are sell outs. Why? They're still playing what they've always played. They're just finally getting the recognition they deserve.

That said, I think the punk sound has been so well appropriated by mainstream song manufactuers that in some cases, it's not the style of the music that's original anymore but the melodies and the lyrics. American Idiot smoke to me a thousand times more than their last few albums because of the progressive aspects of their lyrics, and their catchy as hell harmonies.
