Yesterday, I wrote about one of the ugliest things Ive seen containing racism, inequality, and inaction in the face of injustice- human shortcomings. Luckily, I have been blessed to witness far more beauty, or maybe its just what I choose to see. After a late night conversation about a moment of beauty with Onegin, and being generally asked to relate stories of beauty and ugliness inCommonman journal, I think I will balance yesterday with a little beauty. I hope my words can do the memory justice.
We were riding horses through the riverbed at the bottom of the damn surrounded by their smell, dust, and the creak of leather. The small trickle of water allowed to spill kept the surrounding area lush. The late afternoon sun came in golden shafts through the live oaks, catching the dust in the air and almost becoming solid. Suddenly, there was a thrashing in the bushes to our side and all the horses froze. Then he appeared, a giant buck with a huge rack of antlers that had escaped the hunters guns for many years. He thrashed one more time, broke free, and ran silently up the path through the golden light, with long, green trails of the vines still in his antlers streaming behind him. A perfect moment of beauty in silent green and gold that I use to chase away the ugliness.

One of the things I miss most living where I do is the lack of wildlife. I grew up in rural Illinois and I was just used to that. Then I lived in Minneapolis and I loved that despite it being a large city I would often encounter deer, raccoons, beavers and even the occasional fox. It also had so many beautiful wild areas near the river and lakes. Here in St. Louis I rarely even see squirrels. It feels so lifeless sometimes.
