The elementary school is on winter break now. Friday we had our winter party potluck - parents & surrounding community & friends were invited. The kids were off the hook - running and jumping, singing and yelling and making a big mess of the cafeteria. I won't be seeing them until January 18th! When I was in elementary school, we had only 2 weeks off for xmas vacation.
This last week, the kids did a lot of artsy projects: reindeer made with flat clothes pins, penguin ornaments, and paper gingerbread men. The ones pictured below are examples I made for the kids so they could better visualize the projects.
I love the white/off-white carpet in my bedroom. I don't even mind the occasional doggy footprint. What is life without carpet stain remover?
I have a new upper ear cartilage piercing. This is a long time coming. I've been wanting to get this piercing since I was an undergrad, even since highschool. Also, you can see that my hair is entirely overcooked. I will stop with the rapid hair color changes, sometime soon.
I love cheese pizza and strawberry margaritas. Lousy jobs make the good ones possible. Marriage is not just for old people. It was tough to give these guys away:

About solstice in the southern hemisphere: yes, their longest day is our shortest day, so their summer solstice is the same as our winter solstice. I guess on the equator they have two summer solstices (at our equinoxes, when the sun is right over the equator) and two winter solstices (at our solstices, when their days are shortest). (I'm making up all this stuff about the equator...
I'm a bit of a grinch this time of year (well, okay, a lot of a grinch). I don't fit in particularly well (socially) any time of the year, but somehow the effect is accentuated by the weight of cultural expectations at this time. On the one hand, I don't get into the "holiday spirit" at all, but on the other hand I feel obliged to fake it for the sake of family serenity. Hence the urge to go camping...
