Yeah well...I get the feeling I'm just not cut out for this
All these strategies, hidden agendas and politics
But if we can stand before legions of enemies, just you and I
Then I'll gladly put up with this shit till the day that I die
Easyworld - "Till The Day" (2004)
I had arguably the worst day ever yesterday. Came inches away from a road accident first thing in the morning - was driving along the road towards a junction when the engine on my car started to splutter. Put the clutch in and the thing inevitably stalled. During the split second I looked down at the ignition to start the thing again, a cyclist crossed the junction in front of me and I very nearly knocked the poor sod down. Fortunately, he got away with just having to swerve very wildly for a bit although the gesture he gave me as I was driving off has just left me hoping he doesn't report me or anything - lack of a car or having to pay a fine when my money's this short really is the last bloody thing I need right now.
And just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, went to the supermarket for my lunch. Upon looking for something to drink, they were out of everything except horrible Panda Cola (note to any non-Brits reading - ultra-yukky cheapo cola). Got it back to me car, opened it and, yup you guessed it, fell victim to the old "exploding pop bottle" trick leaving the front seat of my car covered in the horrible stuff. Meaning I'm now gonna have to go to a petrol station to use the sodding Carvac at some point.
And, to make things worse, the bloody car park was gridlocked meaning it took me half an hour to get out leaving me 15 minutes late back to work. I'm very lucky my boss just found this funny. And, to really top it off, I got a load of verbals down the phone from one of our customers for something which wasn't even my fault.
Fucking hell I hate office work. I just wish I'd had the brains to get my life organised a bit sooner than now. Things I regret not doing in the last few years:
1) Doing a degree that had some sort of a job at the end of it. When I was at Keele, I did History and Politics simply 'cos I enjoyed them. The former is a classic "no job" degree while the very fact I have morals probably excludes me from a career in the latter - the only reason I really did it was to make sure I understood it so none of the bastards who run this country will ever hoodwink me come election time. Given the choice again though, I reckon I'd have done Business Studies and Computing - least that way I'd probably be earning a lot more than I am now.
2) Not having the guts to follow my dreams through when I left Uni - my plan was always to get some money together and start my own business (the original plan was a record and T-shirt shop with a cafe section at the back but now I think it'll just be a record shop). I dunno why I got cold feet - I think it was a combination of two things, firstly the fact that I was 12,000 in debt at the time and the thought of borrowing more money scared the hell out of me especially as the very reason I'd had to leave Uni one year into a postgrad course was that I was well and truly skint (and also that I was failing it as the course was nothing like it said in the brochure but that's another story). Secondly, until very recently I've always had a very defeatist attitude and I think a lot of that came from being out of Uni, having to go drinking with most of the people I was going drinking with six years ago (a few of whom, it's fair to say, I never liked much in the first place as they have a classic high and mighty "I'm right everyone else is wrong" attitude about everything). It seems like all my life I've had people telling me that I'm shit and will never amount to anything and it's only recently I've started to realise that they were wrong. Getting the whole Primitive Promotions thing up and going was probably a big factor in changing all that - I'll be honest and say that when primate first told me about the idea my initial thought was "he must be mad - this'll never work". But look at it now, it's up, not only is it working but it's also fucking well making money - who'd've thunk it? Not me this time last year for one.
So, quite simply, these days I'm determined to finally get back to night school next year, enrol on that Business Studies course, borrow that business loan off the bank and get that sodding record shop up and going. As for those "mates" of mine...I just stopped going drinking with them and they sort of drifted out of my life. A lot easier than I was worried they would've.
(breathes in deeply after all that)
But anyway, today's been okay - no real stress which was what I needed. Sorry if that rant went on a bit but I really needed to get it all out of my system. Off to a gig tonight by a group called David R Black from Oldham who I saw supporting Antiproduct last year and are quite good in an "early Placebo minus the androgyny" sort of way - give 'em a listen should they be playing near you.
Hope everyone's okay - oh and if you get the chance, go and say something nice to the very lovely Vicky as she's having a bit of a bad time of it at the mo.
Have a good weekend & speak soon.
