Death Race:
So I just saw Death Race this weekend. After just getting over my Doomsday high, this was the perfect movie. Set in 2012 after the US economy collapses, prisons have been outsourced, corruption everywhere, etc, one prison has a system where the winner of 5 no rules races gets to go home free. Of course, the more death, the higher the ratings and all that. So that's the premise, and people begin to be setup to be imprisoned so they have to race. More post-apocalyptic type goodness. Blood and gore aplenty. Great action and effects. In my opinion, a compelling and believable story. Some requisite hot ladies (all the drivers have female prisoner navigators). It's loud with gunfire and engines and explosions. A great film overall, and I recommend you all go see it.
Unlike Doomsday, which is purposefully over the top and exaggerated, Death Race is more grounded and serious in it's portrayal, although it is overall an entertaining action movie. It works though, and it never hits the "That's just fuckin stupid" point.
Jason Statham is really growing on me. At first I didn't like him as an actor, but after seeing him in a few movies now, and especially this one, he's really starting to grow on me.
