Do you enjoy perfectly average medium-budget sci-fi sequels that don’t so much make errors in execution but don’t have much to execute in the first place? Then may I recommend Skylines, which unknown at the time to us is third in a series—but it has a generous recap at the beginning, so we were up to speed. (At the time, we did think gosh this...

Do you enjoy creepy horror thrillers with a touch of art house sensibility in them? Then may I recommend Cuckoo, a film we saw in the theater but really could have waited for streaming. Excellent trailer tricked us into thinking it would be more creepy and frightening than it actually was. It’s a fine film. Just not as tense or scary as we hoped.

Neon are very good at their marketing campaigns. I haven't seen Cuckoo yet, but I thought the same thing about Longlegs. Touted as the scariest movie in a decade, made to look super creepy in all the promos, and it was just a pretty decent cop thriller in the end, I wouldn't even call it horror.

Do you enjoy dull, tedious movies whose intended audience is the only mystery? Then may I recommend Miss Willoughby and the Haunted Bookstore, which has a weak, cliché script suggestive of a YA audience who wouldn’t know better—but all the characters are old and the pacing and dialogue are antagonistic…so who is this for? Elderly immature masochists doing jigsaw puzzles who need something on in...

Do you enjoy well executed action thrillers? Then may I recommend Land of the Bad, which was compelling from the beginning. It illustrates what happens when good acting, direction, and editing are allowed to elevate a simple plot right up to a great watch that captured and held our interest throughout.

Do you enjoy ridiculously entertaining superhero movies that are amazing and have comically gory fun? Then may I recommend Deadpool & Wolverine, which is full awesome in executing exactly what you expect and hope everything it could be. Knowledge of the Loki series is helpful but not required. Not to worry tho—to quote Deadpool: “That’s a lot of exposition for a threequel.” Come for the...

Do you enjoy major motion pictures that somehow feel a little flat? Then may I recommend Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which on paper has everything going for it, but after it’s all put together…lacks spirit? I can’t say exactly why, (script maybe?) it just isn’t all what it tries to be, really.

Do you enjoy post-apocalyptic horror movies that explain nothing—and don’t need to because the story is the three main characters? Then may I recommend The Arcadian, where the creature design is mysteriously, interestingly intriguing, and the characters, acting, and SFX are all good. It’s a simple story done well because it focuses on what it needs to.

Do you enjoy really good historical dramas set in 1830 New Zealand with lots of Māori dialogue and excellent cinematography? Then may I recommend The Convert, which is compelling start to end. It’s not a white savior movie and little to do with religion. It’s way more complex and interesting.
