Once, quite a while ago, I was trying to do something-or-other on a skateboard. I forget what it was exactly that I was doing, but I succeeded in "rolling" my left ankle. It sort of bugs me now that I can't remember what it was that I was doing, but I remember sitting on the sidewalk outside of the coffee shop downtown, just sitting there, waiting for my shit to start swelling up, yelling "FUCK! FUCK! SHIT!" over and over. Li and Maia were there. That's the most I can recall from that day.
Shortly thereafter (still quite a while ago, ie. two years, possibly three) I became unable to walk with my left foot in any real capacity. I had to hobble around on some crutches that used to belong to my mother, crutches that weren't quite right for my height (being that I'm taller than my mother), resulting in those oh-so-nice rubbed away spots (on the insides of your arms) that everyone who's ever been on crutches knows so well. After falling down my parents' stairs a few times (thirteen stairs, if I'm not mistaken - I'm just a dork and I count stairs as I ascend/descend them - Escalators suck, for the record), I finally decide, "fuck it" and go to have a doctor check it out. He said it was a combination of several things..
1) Definite ankle sprain.
2) Most likely torn muscles/ligaments/tendons/whatever.
3) Hairline fracture of one or more metatarsal bones.
Doctor's orders. Wait out the ankle sprain. Likewise with the torn muscles and whatnot. Don't do anything strenuous for at least three months and the metatarsals will heal back (reasonably) as they were. Whatever you do, don't skate.
I got a bunch of pills from the Doctor, in their cute little promotional freebie packages, two pills to each foil-sealed package, maybe 20-30 packages. Vioxx, I believe. For all the harm they supposedly can cause, what with lawsuits going on right now and all, at least no one can say that they didn't work. I could fuck my shit totally up, pop one of those, and be back skating in about half an hour.
Anyway, my left foot (ha) doesn't usually bother me anymore, but every once in a while, it starts to hurt. First, I notice it as my left shoe starts to feel like something is pushing against the outside of my foot. Then it starts feeling really stiff. After a few hours or so, I'm practically a fucking cripple. I tend to sleep and do nothing when it's like this. Aside from fucking around on the computer, there's not much you can do, when it hurts simply to walk around.
The only reason I even felt like sharing that story was the fact that now, right now, is one of those times. I'm just doing nothing around the house, getting ready to go to sleep, hoping that this goes away by tomorrow. I'm eating Aleve like M&Ms, because that's all there is here to take, that I know of anyway.
Sigh... Fun, fun times. See ya.
